Brookhaven Repositioning + Addition

Brookhaven

As part of Brookhaven’s phased renovation plan, DiMella Shaffer designed a new four-story addition to Brookhaven’s Commons building as well as repositioned many of the building’s amenities and spaces.

The new addition, known as the Andover Building, features a newly expanded fitness center and pool, as well as a new state-of-the-art 300 seat performing arts center with specially designed lighting, acoustic treatments, and sound system on the first two floors. The additions’ third and fourth floors are comprised of 30 new Assisted Living apartments, in which resident care, including memory support, is provided in the most appropriate least restrictive setting and outside of the traditional skilled nursing environment. These new apartments are organized in two households and feature a mix of studio and 1-bedroom units.

With the development of new Assisted Living care apartments, Brookhaven was able to reduce the overall number of skilled nursing beds from 37 to 12. This, in turn, freed up additional building space for the relocation of administrative spaces and further Commons building renovations. Upgrades to the dining facilities were designed for more informal dining option, including a café and bistro. Activity and community rooms were also added, as well as a new library space. This work was designed and constructed in conjunction with the repositioning and expansion of the same building.
